Recently my buddy Dave Mucci made the trip from Chicago to Ocean City, MD, all for the love of automobiles! I figured it'd be pretty whack of me to write an article about H20 International since I've yet to go myself, so I asked the man, the myth, my buddy Mooch, to provide some guest commentary. Some of you may be familiar with Dave's work in 0-60 Magazine, doing detailed engine illustrations. The kid is one hell of an artist, but he isn't a writer by trade and I'm not much of a grammatical genius so bear with us. Hopefully you will be too engaged with the dope photos to give a crap. For the photography, Dave enlisted the help of Patrick Mizenko who took tons of killer photos, only a sliver of which you'll see here, the rest you can check out at Patrick's site. Thanks again to you both!!!
You can call me biased (having been raised with a rust covered MkI Rabbit in the driveway and learning how to drive in a MkII Golf) but in my humble opinion, the Euro scene has some of the best car shows in the country. Especially the VW/Audi crowd or VAG if you prefer. (VAG… hehe)
With that said, my boy “Mooch”, Dave Mucci drove all the way to Maryland this weekend from Chicago in his E30 BMW and he sent over some great photos from the H20 International Fest. I’ll post the photos up in the coming days but I thought I’d start you off with this awesome video from Steven Nawrocki. He did a great job of capturing the automotive onslaught of Ocean City that is H20. Enjoy all of the great cars from the show (Especially all the pristine MkII Golfs that I dream of owning!) Great job Steven!
Detroit's annual Woodward Dream Cruise rolled into town this weekend along with droves of visitors looking to get in on the fun and Cruise Woodward. The estimated attendance was to the tune of just over 1 million visitors, which is said to be a few hundred thousand less than last year, although I'm not sure exactly how you'd go about counting everyone. Despite the Los Angeles-style traffic that comes with so many visitors, the boost in the economy is more than welcome around these parts. I even saw a few nuns, of all people, hustling visitors for their prime parking spots at a church parking lot. Well done sisters!
For Detroiters, it was a pleasant surprise to see the American automakers on hand and still showing their support for the event. Ford went as far as shutting down a portion of 9 mile Rd. in Ferndale,MI to turn it into Mustang Alley, lining both sides of the street with Mustangs from all generations and styles. It was pretty impressive such a variety of Mustangs including the original Shelby's from the mid-60's. Read more...
The 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise officially kicks off today but for many, the world's largest 1 day automotive culture event, has been on our minds for quite some time. The Dream Cruise draws nearly 1 million visitors to the Detroit area, bringing with them upwards to 40,000 vehicles. Nearly every automotive segment is covered, from hot rods to muscle cars and everything else you can imagine. There was even a Hemi-powered BBQ one year, so it's not an exaggeration to say that there is nothing the Dream Cruise doesn't have. I'll be covering the event over the weekend but I thought I'd dive into the wheels I'll be "Cruisin" in. Read more...
The automotive scene in America in many ways reflects the culture of the nation as a whole. With such a diverse make up there is something for everyone, from drifting to hot rodding and everything in between. These “subcultures” have become a part of who we are and in many instances become our way of life. What we don’t always hear about, is how we influence the cultures of other nations through the automotive lifestyle we live.
When I traveled to the Los Angeles area for the first time last May, I was lucky to stumble upon the Kustom Japan show at Bergamot Station that featured the Kustom Car scene in Japan. The Kustom scene in Japan is an adaptation of Americana hitting the streets of Japan with new vision and some of the same ideas of it’s American counterpart. I was really taken by photographer Michael McCabe‘s work in the show because it showed me a culture and lifestyle I knew nothing about.
While scouring the web today, I fell upon the work of Paulina Mirowska, a Polish photographer who’s work has done the same for me that McCabe’s work did. It enlightened me and told me a story I hadn’t heard, and even better, it told it with photography!
Paulina’s photos of the Berlin RoadRunners are pretty fresh and it’s amazing to see big body Cadillacs and classic American trucks on the streets and dragways of Germany. I’m not too familiar with Paulina’s other work or the Kustom scene in Germany, but my search has begun. With Detroit’s Woodward Dream Cruise only a few weeks away I’m excited to see how we represent our own Kustom and Rodding culture in the country that invented it!
