VIDEO> UK Drifting Is Exciting With JDM Allstars!

JDM Allstars NISSAN FACTORY – Round 3, 2010 from Josh Allen on Vimeo.

At last! Here’s Josh Allen‘s latest installment of this season’s JDM Allstars video coverage. It also happens to be the debut of his new production company – Will Shoot For Food. Although it might be a little schizophrenic to some, I love the way this video has been cut. It’s a huge mix of intense action, great camerawork, a dope soundtrack and a certain human element that you don’t see that often in drift videos.

To me, the video has a great balance between good footage, a good song and some slick editing, and the (usually) boring motorsport “who won what and championship points” style coverage.

Keep up the good work Josh!

ARCHAEOLOGY> Imports at Bonneville Salt Flats

I'm stoked to be writing about the Bonneville Salt Flats for MotorMavens! I've been a HUGE fan of the site since it started last year. A super quick intro might be in order, I guess... I'm Chris Hecht, originally from SoCal, now living in Utah. I'm a husband of ten years, father of four boys, Quality Engineer for a medical device manufacturer by day, and car fanatic by... day and night. I live two hours from Lands End - where paved road meets the other planet known as the Bonneville Salt Flats.

I've been going to Bonneville's "Great White Dyno" for three (going on four) years. I was first invited out by my co-worker and friend Dallas Volk (too bad he's no relation to Volk wheels haha) - but he is a member of the prestigious 200MPH Club. He and his family have been racing a 1929 Ford Roadster his entire life. Dallas, his dad Larry (current President of the 200MPH Club!), brother Patrick and sister Allison (nicknamed "Hollywood") are all in the 200MPH Club. I'm not, but I have contracted a dreaded disease...

I've officially been diagnosed with Salt Fever - and it's uber contagious. Bonneville has its own culture and feel, just like drifting, time attack or drag racing. There are the old timers and veterans who keep the traditions alive with the new blood learning the ropes while adding their own style, flair and background.

I hope to bring to the MotorMavens readers a view of this motorsport and share the cars and culture that make it what it is today. For this first post, we'll have a look at some of the import land speed cars I've spotted. As you'd guess, the majority of cars built to make top speed runs down the long salt, of course, are American. However, the great part about Bonneville (and El Mirage) is that there are A LOT of classes to run in - many of which are perfect for Japanese and European cars because of their engine selections and aerodynamics.

Check the first picture. This Ferrari (#288) runs in the AA/BGMS class (AA = over 500 cubic inches, Blown (super or turbocharger), Gas Modified Sports). According to SCTA's site, it went 235mph and there's a comment on the notes..."Smoke?" Like any motorsport, land speed racing is all about the details. Check the front fenders...aero diffusers (not sure what they call them) to help direct the airflow and add stability. Most of these cars never see a wind tunnel, but the aero tricks are tried and true.   Read more...

VIDEO> BMW M3: Come Ride With Me!

BMW M3 Film from 3seriesblogcom on Vimeo.

I came across this inspiring video from 3seriesblogcom, featuring the new E90 BMW M3 Coupe and thought I’d share. The new M3 is the first to get a 4.0 liter V8 engine, which kicks out an amazing 414 horses and 295 ft-lbs of torque, taking you from 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds. Oh, and daaammmn if you won’t look good doing it.

There’s a lot more I could say about this car, but let’s be honest – I’d drive that girl anywhere she wanted. Except my home…..where my lady would be…… waiting to kick the ever-loving @#$! out of me. Well, as long as I got to drive the M3, it’d be worth the beating…I guess. (Actually, knowing my gal, she’d probably forgive me if I just handed over the keys, hot girl or no hot girl.)

So check out the sick ride this video takes you on and dream of the day that you get to pick-up your luscious lady from the airport and take her for a ride… in… your… M3… *cough*cough*

Enjoy!

POINT&SHOOT> Apex’i Lexus SC430 Debut Party

More videoblog screwing around with the iPhone 4… Saturday night, we were out at J Lounge in Downtown Los Angeles for the Apex’i x Lexus Party, organized by Clark from VIP Autosalon. Again, this is not a professional video in the least bit. Hahaha… this is what you get when you have drinks with the guys from Apex’i, Hankook Tire, VIP Autosalon and City Tire Online at their VIP table… and then you decide it would be a good idea to film a video, and upload it to the MotorMavens Channel on YouTube directly from an iPhone 4 while you’re still out with your friends.

We’ve been doing so many of these little short unedited video segments recently, just because the iPhone 4 makes it real easy… but one thing we realized is the fact that we need to get a better (directional) microphone for the phone when we’re shooting videos like this.

Masaki from Apex’i USA was attempting to give our viewers information about the Apex’i and Lexus drift program, but he kept getting interrupted because the guy behind the camera (who shall remain nameless) kept getting distracted by short skirts and mentions of new car parts being introduced to the Apex’i lineup. Sorry for the apparent lack of focus in this video (haha)… but make sure you go to the Apex’i USA website for actual information on the new Apex’i Power FC Commander that is coming out, and information and photos of their newly introduced Lexus SC430.

POINT&SHOOT> VIP UCF10 Lexus LS400 in DTLA

This obviously isn’t a professional video or anything. I just shot this videoblog last night with my iPhone 4 (because that’s all I had in my pocket) as I was walking up to the Apex’i and Lexus and VIP Autosalon party at J Lounge in Downtown LA.

I don’t know any details about this car at all. I just figured, what the hell. I might as well shoot a super quick carspotting videoblog with my phone before walking into the party, so our readers can see the types of cars we sometimes run into randomly on the street in Southern Cali. If you guys would like to see more of these types of quick and simple videoblogs more often, let us know! Just trying out something new…

VIDEO> DMCC Rd. 3 at ICAR Motorsports Complex

Before we get to the video hinted at in the title, I’ve decided to take a moment to introduce myself and my team for those who may not recognize me.

My name is Dan Cyr, and I’m the guy behind the Cyrious Productions lens and computer screen. I’ve been following drifting in Canada for several years now, riding along with my brother, AE86 driver Pat Cyr and the Drift Posse. We’ve been at drift events from Quebec to Edmonton and in between, as well as a few down south… You can be sure to see us at more of them this year.

I’m not going to go into the meaty details of this event, since the actual Driftmania Canadian Championship event coverage will be taken care of by fellow Ontario MotorMaven Jover Papag, who was an absolute blast to hang out with all weekend, as well as being wicked help on the track.

What I can tell you though is that the event was great, and the whole team had piles of fun. This round was the first ever round of Drift Mania held at ICAR Motorsports Complex at the Mirabel Airport. It was a pretty neat looking track, being extremely flat and paved entirely in concrete. (more…)

PERSPECTIVE> Formula D Seattle Through My Eyes

Since Formula D Seattle, all the members of the crew have all been super incredibly busy handling all sorts of things related to the website and promotions, so we decided to hold off on our normal "event coverage" stories so that I could write different type of story - something more of a perspective piece. Normally, we always have Antonio write the event stories, because he seems to have the most experience, and he knows all the details of the drivers and everything. However, this time, the guys asked ME to write about my own personal experiences at FD Seattle.

This year's Formula D Seattle marks my first anniversary as a part of the Motor Mavens Crew. At last year's event, I didn't even know Antonio yet. In fact, I only met him at the end of the event, when he was out in the parking lot, chillin with our friends Ian Dillon and Raymond Vazquez.

I gotta say... this year has been one hell of a ride! Just in this past year, I've attended three other Formula D events, done multiple local drift event coverages, car features, cruises, meets, and everything else in between. As a local Seattle-based contributor for MotorMavens, my main goal was to blow up the Pacific Northwest scene since I know it has some of the sickest cars around! We also have some highly skilled drifters up here - such as Formula D drivers Roland Gallagher, Nikolay Konstantinov, Ian Fournier, and Victor Moore. Since this event was local, there was no doubt that all these guys would be attending. I knew this was going to be a great event!   Read more...

NEWSWORTHY> MotorMavens on VholdR Website!

MotorMavens VholdR ContourHD Formula Drift Seattle Justin Shreeve POV video

While we were attending the Apex’i/Lexus Formula D pre-party in Downtown Seattle, we were fortunate enough to spill a few drinks with our new friends at Twenty20, the company who created the incredible VholdR and ContourHD wearable HD camcorders.

The very first time I had ever seen or heard of the ContourHD camera was when MotorMavens Sharpshooter Travis Hodges used it to shoot his Spirit of Irwindale Formula Drift video last year. Since then, the cameras have become more and more popular within the automotive community, with filmmakers like Justin Shreeve and MotorMavens UK shooter Josh Allen now using the cameras to document the numerous events that they attend.

We were treated to a nice surprise from the Twenty20 folks, when they featured Justin Shreeve’s MotorMavens videos in their customer newsletter. Thanks for the love, Twenty20! We’ll make sure to return it twentyfold!

VIDEO> AWFILMS does Formula D Seattle

AWFILMS | Formula Drift | Seattle from Abbitt Wilkerson on Vimeo.

Abbitt Wilkerson needs no introduction. You know who he is. 18 and famous. Haha! Anyway, check out his new cut from Formula Drift Round 4 at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. Better late than never and definitely worth the wait. This video has great energy and had me excited from beginning to end. With plenty of creative shots and a surprisingly appropriate song choice, I couldn’t be happier with this video. Good work, Abbitt!

VIDEO> Format67′s Dreamy NSX Edit

HONDA NSX (EXTENDED VERSION) BY FORMAT67.NET from FORMAT67.NET on Vimeo.

I love everything about this breathtaking edit from Format67… the concept; the cinematography; the grading; the sound design… EVERYTHING. The superb attention to detail reveals a master craftsman at work. This video breaks the barrier between its creator and the viewer in an attempt to capture the soul of the automobile; the soul of racing; and the soul of the enthusiast; to which I think Daniel Michaelis and his crew accomplish a stunning victory.
