COVERAGE> Rod&Kulture Nostalgic Dragfest, Pt.1

When I was growing up and first became interested in cars, Japanese cars were the focus of my automotive interests. My grandfather and all my uncles drove Toyotas, so that might have something to do with it. In college, I hung out with mostly Asian kids that were "fixing up" their import cars (although in reality, most of them didn't know what the hell they were doing at the time; they were ruining the reliability of their street cars in hopes of looking cool at the illegal street races), so American domestic cars were definitely not on my radar at the time.

Even though I've always admired and respected cars like 1968 Camaros and Shelby Daytona coupes, I'll honestly admit that when I was younger, I was never really interested in musclecars or hot rodding either - probably because I completely misunderstood what hot rod culture was all about! I used to think that hot rods were only for old guys that wore unfashionable Hawaiian print shirts with their cargo shorts, long white socks, and military trucker hats bearing the name of some sort of Navy vessel they worked on back in the day. I just didn't get it. The whole hot rod scene just didn't connect for me - possibly because most of the muscle car owners from my high school were always at odds with the import car crowd. Their high-and-mighty attitudes and constant disparagement of the 4-cylinder cars I loved created a social barrier that made it hard for Japanese car enthusiasts like me to connect to and learn about the cooler aspects of hot rodding.

It actually wasn't until I began building and restoring my 1973 Corolla 1600SR that I began seeing a lot of parallels between the Japanese nostalgic car culture that I love and the whole hot rod and scene. I don't want to get too deep into this subject (at least not in this story), but let's just say I'm a big fan of traditional hot rods, retro funny cars, and diggers now! This being said, I obviously couldn't miss Rod&Kulture Magazine's annual Dragfest at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, CA this weekend!   Read more...

CARSPOTTING> Asphalt Gigolo Monza Funny Car!

To continue on with some of my previously posted photos from the So Cal Speed Shop Open House, I thought I'd shine a spotlight on one of the cars that really caught my eye as I walked onto So Cal's back lot - The Asphalt Gigolo.

This early 1970s Chevy Monza funny car immediately captured my attention as it sat amongst all the hot rods at So Cal, basking in the late afternoon sunlight. Like I mentioned previously in my story, I've recently become a fan of retro funny cars. Everything from the style to the fat drag slicks to the forward-raked stance to the vintage paint and logos on the car to the monstrous 540 cubic inch big block engine, stainless steel, and big blower sticking out the hood... what's not to like?   Read more...

VIDEO> Rod & Kulture Dragfest

Check out our profile pages on YouTube and Streetfire.net, where one of our resident shooters, Travis Hodges, just posted more camera test footage from the Canon HF S100 video camera, which is only $899 online at B&H Photo. We’re pretty impressed at what this consumer level, sub $1000 HD camera can accomplish.

To capture this footage, he drove all the way out to Bakersfield California to the Rod & Kulture Dragfest at Famoso Raceway. If you like retro funny cars, wheelies, burnouts and nitro breathing beasts like we do, you better watch this video.

What do you think… do you want to see more of this type of stuff on Motor Mavens? Or should we just stick to our core competency – Japanese and European cars?

COVERAGE> More Rod&Kulture Dragfest!

Continuing our photographic coverage of the Rod&Kulture Dragfest in Bakersfield... What's that? Love Potion #9o? Reminiscent of the early days of drag racing it's interesting to see the relationships between the Dragster, his car and his girl.   Read more...

COVERAGE> 2009 Rod&Kulture Dragfest

On our first outing to the Rod & Kulture Dragfest, we honestly weren't too sure what to expect. The drive up to Bakersfield seemed to take forever, especially since we had to drive through a bunch of orchards to get to the track. All of a sudden, Famoso Raceway appeared. Upon arriving at the Rod & Kulture Dragfest at Famoso, we realized that this event felt different than events we've been to at Irwindale, California Speedway, and LA County Raceway. The Rod & Kulture Dragfest felt more underground; it wasn't like other big mainstream drag races we've been to. In fact, it was quite the opposite of a big drag race; it was more like finding the secret hideout of the most hardcore hot rodders and draggers.   Read more...

WEBMINING> Flight of the Red Dragon

We Motor Mavens haven’t been to a nostalgic drag event as a group yet, but after watching this video, we really, really, really, really, really, really want to go! Really!

Drag racing isn’t a world where we normally dwell, but it’s hard not to appreciate the drama and the excitement built up by these incredible looking cars! We just LOVE the way these retro funny cars look… and we’re just AMAZED at how fast they go!

In this video, watch The Red Dragon, the red metallic car in the far lane… as it completes its run, it actually launches itself into the sky!!! OMG!!! (more…)
